Noise pollution is unpleasant or unwanted sound. It comes from human or machine sources and disrupts the quality of the workplace environment
Excessive noise levels can be hazardous and can lead to:
- Annoyance and aggression;
- Abnormal secretions of hormones;
- Tensing of muscles;
- High blood pressure;
- Elevated stress levels;
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears); and
- Sleeplessness and fatigue.
Complications and further health problems include forgetfulness, depression and panic attacks.
It's important that you're aware of signs of hearing loss so you can protect your employees.
Is your employee showing any of these signs? He may be losing his hearing
Since hearing loss takes place gradually, be aware of these signs:
- Inability to hear in large groups of people or when there's lots of background noise;
- Complaining that others speak indistinctly; and
- Not hearing sounds like doorbells, hooters, alarm clocks or telephones.
When you've identified these signs, implement measures to reduce noise levels
to below 85dB (A). This is the required safety standard. Keep in mind that where noise levels exceed 85dB (A), your workers must wear hearing protection.
Remember, noise interferes with communication that can affect job performance and safety. So be sure to lookout for signs of hearing loss so you can protect your employees.
