HSE Committee meeting representatives

Your health and safety committee won't achieve its objectives if it holds ineffective meetings because thats where important health and safety decisions must be taken. So make sure your health and safety representatives ALWAYS report on the following activities so you can comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).

Your health and safety committee needs to operate effectively so that it can fulfill its legal responsibilities

So when your health and safety representatives compile their agenda, make sure reporting on these functions forms part of their agenda.

Here's what your health and safety representatives must report on during committee meetings

Your health and safety representatives must report on:

Reviewing the effectiveness of health and safety measures

Identifying potential hazards and potential major incidents at the workplace

Examining the causes of incidents at the workplace

Investigating complaints by employees relating to health or safety at work

Making representations on general matters affecting the health or safety of the employees at the workplace

Inspecting the workplace

Participating in consultations with inspectors at the workplace and accompanying inspectors on inspections of the workplace

Visiting the site of an incident

Attending any investigation or formal inquiry held in terms of the OHSA

Inspecting any document which the OHSA requires you to keep

Participating in any internal health or safety audit

Remember, your health and safety committee won't achieve its objectives if it holds ineffective meetings. So make sure your health and safety representatives always report on these activities so you can comply with the OHSA.
