Five tips to prevent a workplace fire
Just the other day, a friend of mine told me a harrowing tale of how his home became decimated by a relentless fire. The cause: nothing more than a mere spark, brought about by a faulty electrical cable!
Upon listening to his story, I was once again reminded of the massive risk fire poses to not only residential dwellings, but to businesses as well.
All it takes is just 30 seconds for a small spark to grow into a raging inferno. And so it's highly recommended that you ensure you're prepared for a possible workplace fire.
The first, and arguably the most important, step is to insure your building against a workplace fire.
TIP#2: Fire teams
- Ensure you have fire-fighting equipment that it is well located, demarcated and easily accessible.
- Get a registered technician to test your fire-fighting equipment.
- Ensure all of your employees know how to use your fire-fighting equipment.
- Appoint someone who's trained for emergency situations, and who can act immediately should the situation call for it.
- Also put together and train a fire team to assist the fire emergency supervisor.
Ensure that regular inspections are conducted in and around your workplace. This includes regularly checking electrical installations and equipment, as well as machine-driven equipment, to ensure they're maintained.
TIP#4: Be strict on smoking
Completely ban smoking near all flammable substances in and around your workplace.
TIP#5: Good storage and housekeeping practices
Train your staff on good housekeeping and storage practices, particularly when storing flammable substances in the workplace.
