Ladder Inspection Checklist

The following checklist covers many areas of potential problems. It may be used as a maintenance, department, pre-use or health and safety inspection checklist

Is the ladder complete?
Is the ladder free from signs of temporary repair?
Is the ladder free from any signs of unauthorised modification?
Are the rungs/treads perpendicular to the stiles and handrails?
Are the ladder, rungs and treats free from bends, dents or twists?
Is the ladder free from any signs of cracking, splits, fractures or splinters?
Are all handrails and guards secure?
Are handrails free from burrs and splinters?
Are all hardware connections free from damage (rivets intact and not sheered?)
Are metal parts free from corrosion?
Are pivoting and rotating components lightly oiled and do they move freely?
Are all ropes free from fraying, rot, or other damage?
Is the ladder free from signs of exposure to heat/fire?
Is the ladder free from excessive deposits such as paints?
Additional fixed ladder checks
Is the ladder secured at the base platform?
Is the ladder secured at the landing?
Additional reinforced plastic and timber ladder checks
Is the ladder free from signs of heat damage (including ultraviolet sun damage)?
Does the ladder have sufficient oil/varnish/laminate/other protective coating?
PLASTIC only: Is the ladder free from exposed reinforcing fibres?
TIMBER only: Is the ladder free from signs of decay/pest damage?
